Well, the temperatures are rising to meet the lake levels and river flows–that must mean that Summer is here! What does that mean for fly fishers in the area? Here are some options:

If you can’t get out of the DFW area, look to the local ponds for bass, sunfish, and catfish. Texas Parks and Wildlife stocks the local ponds with catfish. Those same ponds are usually full of sunfish and bass. I have heard recent reports of ponds up near Keller that are producing hand sized sunnies on almost every cast. Check HERE for some sites to check out.

If you have a couple of hours, make the drive out west to the Brazos River below PK. The water releases have been up and down, but if it is near 200-300 CFS, then it is worth the trip. There are striped bass up to three pounds being caught on a pretty regular basis. Also, some sandbass, large and smallmouth bass, and LOTS of carp. Check this site to make sure the water is at 300 CFS and not 10,000.

Have a day or two? Head up to the new Lower Mountain Fork river. Reports are that it is fishing well. We have a couple of members that are headed up there this weekend. Fish spillway creek and learn the new holes created by the flooding.

Have a whole week? Get to Colorado. Especially if that week happens to be from July 18th-25th. The club is traveling to Southfork, Colorado, for the annual outing. There is still some spots available at Foothills with some club members. Email fortworthflyfishers@gmail.com if you are looking for a spot.

Finally, if you can’t make it out fishing, then what about a fishing film festival. Come out on Sunday to support Casting for Recovery on Sunday night!
